“Silence is at the root of our union with God and with one another”

                                                                                     – Mother Teresa*

How much time did you spend this week in intentional silence?

Do you have a high value for silence in your life?

Do you suppose that without intentional cultivation of silence in your life that you will find it in this world?

We live in a noisy world full of televisions, playlists, audio books, and podcasts. We go for a run and the first thing we do is put in our earplugs. We turn on the TV, not because we want to watch it, but because we’re conditioned to have constant background noise.

And then we wonder why it’s so difficult to hear from God.

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”    (I Kings 19:11-12 NIV)

Do you want to hear the Lord? Are you seeking direction and guidance in your life. Maybe now is the time to seriously unplug. Turn off the TV, the radio, the iPod . Shut off the noise and get quiet.

He whispers.

I stand silently to listen for the One I love,

waiting as long as it takes for the Lord to rescue me.

For God alone has become my Savior.

(Psalm 62:1TPT)
